Day Trip to Knocknarae
Posted on: July 17, 2015
Knocknarea Mountain (Hill of the Kings), an hour’s drive from Creevy Cottages along the Wild Atlantic Way route, is visible from all directions to Sligo and beyond and is accessible from two sides – one along the road from the Glen or the road heading from Sligo to Strandhill (new trial opened in 2014 – quite steep).
On the top lies the remains of wild Queen Maeve of Connacht’s Cairn (grave) – dating back to 3000 bc! The tradition is to carry a stone and place on the cairn – bringing you luck! The mound is now 200 feet in diameter and 30 feet high!
The view from the top is breathtaking – on a clear day, you can see as far as Croagh Patrick in Co Mayo to Sliabh League in Co Donegal!
When you have completed the walk, go to Standhill, a few miles away on the Wild Atlantic Way – take a stroll along the stand or the beach (famous for surfing). Don’t forget to call into Mammy Johnston’s (shop at the corner) – a choice of over 30 different flavoured ice cream or to Shells Restaurant where you will get locally produced food, freshly baked breads and cakes catering for all tastes and diets. www.creevyexperience.com
